This protein shake is also known as my Spooky Halloween Smoothie- Doesn’t it look perfect for Halloween?! Check out how in the picture below it looks like the chocolate is melting into the vanilla sweet potato layer…spooky, eh?
Ok, hear me out for a second. I know it might sound weird to add sweet potato to a smoothie, but you know how there are pumpkin smoothies out there? Well, this is kind of the same thing. What I love about putting sweet potato into my protein smoothies is that there is a natural sweetness, so no need to add any extra sweetener.
This is more like a spoonable smoothie, which is the best kind, right? Make this in a food processor (or Vitamix if you are so lucky) to keep this nice and thick. I ended up making twice the recipe so I could fill this huge glass with multiple layers.
This makes a great breakfast or snack. And, of course, you can always omit the protein powder or use one that fits your dietary needs. Keeping things flexible, as always. Have a great weekend!
- ½ scoop vanilla protein powder
- ½ frozen banana
- 2 tablespoons sweet potato puree
- 1/2 tablespoon unsweetened almond milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- ½ frozen banana
- 1 teaspoon almond butter
- 1 ½ tablespoons unsweetened almond milk
- Blend vanilla smoothie ingredients together in a food processor. Set aside.
- Blend chocolate smoothie ingredients together in a food processor.
- Layer the two and enjoy with a spoon.
For the photos, I doubled the recipe, so you may not have enough smoothie to layer as much as I did unless you make double for a lucky friend!

Thanks Leroy! I will hopefully have a recipe coming up soon for a Sweet Potato Oat Cake/Loaf. Fingers crossed it turns out. It’s a great alternative to pumpkin!

I’m intrigued by the sweet potato in a drink but, as you say, Pumpkin can get away with it so why not sweet potato? Sounds like a wonderfully healthy Halloween treat!

Right? Pumpkin always gets the spotlight this time around but sweet potato is a great alternative. I actually think I liked the vanilla sweet potato part of the shake better than the chocolate!
