Halloween is in the air and I am getting in the spirit! Now, what I really mean by that is that I’m ready to eat CANDY! Duh.
In my adult life, I’m not much for parties or events that call for costumes. This is mostly because I know that a good costume requires lots of thought and hard work- two things that I don’t really want to put into an outfit that I will only wear for a day.
This doesn’t, however, mean that I don’t like other things that come along with the Halloween territory, like candy. When I was a kid, I would come home after trick-or-treating, organize my candy by type, and then count it all so I could keep track on a piece of paper. Then, each day I would come home from school and count my candy again to make sure it was all still there. OCD much?! This all started because my parents thought they could get away with sneaking a piece of candy here and there and that I wouldn’t notice. Well little did they know…
These days, I’m a little better at sharing…let’s hope. And I’m not against eating a piece of store-bought candy here and there, but I love making my own even more. Homemade treats are a little healthier because they don’t have the preservatives or ingredients that I can’t pronounce, which is always a good start. Now by “healthy”, I don’t mean that chocolate is the same thing as broccoli- we all know that. But you get the point. When you make your own food, you can control what goes in it. And a bonus is that all the hard work makes it that much sweeter to eat the treats of your labor. 😉
I’ve got a killer roundup for you today of some of my favorite homemade Halloween candy recipes from my blog and others. I tried to get a few non-chocolate treats in there, but it’s just so hard since I’m a true chocolate lover. I hope you give at least one of these recipes a try and if you do, make sure to share a picture with #24carrotlife.
