I took advantage of this long weekend to catch up on some reading for my blog, although I wish I had made some more recipes. I’m off to Boston on Wednesday, so there might be a little lull in posts towards the end of next week.
I have been loving overnight oat recipes ever since I started reading food blogs religiously. It is a great way to get a couple extra minutes of sleep since you don’t have to worry about preparing a healthy and filling breakfast. Angela over at Oh She Glows is always coming up with amazing overnight oat recipes. I decided to start simple here, though.
- 1/2 cup rolled oats, gluten free optional (I made mine instant by putting them in the blender for a few seconds but this step is also optional)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1/2 cup greek yogurt (I used 0% fat)
- 1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup-3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
- Combine all ingredients in a jar. Close the jar and shake until well combined.
- Place in the refrigerator overnight and add more milk in the morning if you would like a thinner consistency.
- Top with fruit and/or granola.
What is the calorie count on this?
Hi Pattie- I do not have any calorie counts on my recipes. This is something I may do in the future but for now I’m not quite there. Thanks!
I have another question. What size of jar do you need? Please let me know, blessings Laura
What is the calorie count on this?
I do not have any calorie counts for my recipes. This may be something I will look into for the future, but since my blog is so young I am not quite there yet. I can assure you though that this is a healthy breakfast option that will keep you full for a long time. Enjoy, Pattie!
Do you have to put the chia seeds? I have never tried them so I am not sure if I would like them
You can definitely leave the chia seeds out, but you will need to reduce the liquid a bit (since the chia seeds soak up a lot of liquid) and the whole mixture might not be as thick and creamy. Chia seeds are completely flavorless and have omega 3 fats, protein, and fiber. They are really great in smoothies, on yogurt, in granola, on salads, etc- you should give them a try!
TRY THEM!!! You’ll be glad you did!
🙂
Do you eat this cold or heat it? If you heat it, what do you do?
You could do either, Sam. I prefer mine cold, but if you want you can just heat it up in the microwave until it reaches the temperature you like!
This would be great for my early days @ work!! I am going to try it
Just calculated the calories. I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk and the calorie found was 384.
Hi Barbara- thanks for your comment! I came up with a slightly different final calorie count using Spark Recipes but I think it all depends on if you make any adjustments.
Is there an alternative to almond milk?
Definitely! Any dairy or non-dairy milk will work- soy, hemp, coconut, low fat cow’s milk, etc.
This looks yummy. Is this eaten cold?
You can eat it cold or heat it in the microwave but I prefer mine cold!
I made this last night and tried it this morning. My favorite Overnight oats recipe yet. Good vanilla flavor and I love the chia seed texture. I added about 1Tbsp shredded unsweetened coconut for another layer of flavor-YUM!
Such amazing news, Andrea! I had a serious love affair with overnight oats this summer and now I’ve transitioned into warm breakfasts like eggs and pumpkin bakes. Yum!
Does this have to be in a glass jar or can I use a Tupperware container?
You can use any container that works for you! I like to make mine in tupperware containers so I can take them on my way to work.
Will the glass break if heated in microwave
I don’t think it will but you could always transfer it to another bowl if you’re worried.
I made this recipe in separate jars so everyone in my family could have one. We all threw it out. It was disgusting! The only question in my mind is the oats. We used Quaker Oats’ brand, not steel cut, not instant. Any ideas as to where we may have gone wrong? We tried it cold and then heated it. :/
Sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy this recipe, Angie. I have used rolled oats and instant oats before and I know that some people even use steel cut. Maybe the cold aspect wasn’t for you?
Wow. Rude.
Hello! I made this yesterday for today’s breakfadt and it was really good! I try another recipe before without the milk and I did not like it. Thank you so much for sharing it! I will pass it on:)
So glad you liked it Sandra!
Looks like a great preK project; what size jar does this recipe need?
Great way to teach kids about eating a healthy breakfast! I think you could do with a jar the size of peanut butter.
This was delicious!! I replaced the honey/agave syrup with 1/4 cup raw coconut water, which is naturally sweet, and reduced the milk to 1/4 cup so it wasn’t too runny. 1 tsp of vanilla extract seemed like a lot, but it really added to the flavour.. mmmmm 🙂 Next time I might try replacing some of the oats with barley flakes and rye flakes for more texture. Will definitely make this again… thank you!
Ooh I LOVE the idea of removing the sweetener and using coconut water instead. I am definitely going to have try that! I’ve tried quinoa flaked but never barley or rye flakes. They sound great! So glad you liked it!
Omg i just took my first bite and its DELICIOUS!! I didnt have almond milk so i used coconut and im a newbie at chia seeds so im really excited this is so good lol thank you!
So glad you liked it, Emily! It’s one of my favorite breakfasts (especially if I’m doing an early morning workout and just want to grab something on the go)!
Where can I get China seeds?
You can find chia seeds online or at health food stores. I buy mine at Vitacost.com
Thank you!
Would steel cut oats work? Thx!
I think so, Jen! I haven’t tried them myself but I’ve seen lots of overnight oats recipes using steel cut oats and I think the only difference is that they will be chewier than classic oats.
I’ll keep you posted. I tried it last night, but the liquid didn’t reach all of the oats. I added some and stirred well. We will see how it goes!
It works and tastes good! However, the steel cut oats are a little chewy for me. I’m going to get some rolled oats next time I’m at the store and try with those. 🙂
Ya that’s what I’ve heard. I think you’ll like rolled oats better then!
Firstly, I have no idea why all the comments are about calories, it’s oats and chia seeds not a jar of mars bars, secondly the idea is overnight oats not really supposed to be heated thats what porridge is
Yummilicious!!! I tried this last night and this morning had my best bowl of oats ever. I used low fat milk and topped mine with bananas and raw almonds. Great recipe. Thanks for sharing
So glad it worked out for you! This is one of my all time favorite recipes on the blog 🙂
Hello!
Are rolled oats and the “old fashion” oats that you use to make oatmeal the same thing? May be a silly question. I’m new to this 🙂
Yes, they are the same! Not a silly question. I hope you like it, Jarah!
Wondering if I could make a weeks worth at one time? Thanks
Absolutely, Karla! You’ll just want to multiply the recipe by however many days and people you have. I love prepping overnight oats for the week and putting it all into different containers so I can just grab it on the way out the door. Enjoy!
For how long are they good for? Bcuz I meal prep for the whole week….
You can definitely make them on the weekend for the week ahead! Enjoy!
Made this last night — LOVED IT for breakfast, cold!!
I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it! It is my go-to quick breakfast and I usually make a big batch and divide it into individual portions for the week!
Just tried this and loved it!! Will definitely make it a staple. Thank you!!
So glad to hear you enjoyed it, Patty!
Thank you–this was great! My husband, three-year-old and I all loved it. We used steel-cut oats, dairy milk, and orange essence, and added walnuts and raisins. Yum!
Are there really 81 carbs in this recipe? Or is that a typo?
Hi Deanna- sorry I missed your question earlier. I updated the nutritional information. It’s tough since different sources say different things but I think the numbers I posted are more accurate than what I had before. Thanks for pointing this out!
