For someone who writes a healthy food and living blog, I still have some unhealthy tendencies. Every now and then I let my healthy eating go a bit. Travel is the hardest time for me to stay on track since I tend to think of it as a “vacation” even if it is for work. This past week I was in Vermont and Massachusetts for work and had pretty elaborate meals every day that I never would have eaten under normal circumstances. This is one of the benefits/downfalls of having work pay for my meals. Let’s just say that there was a lot of pizza, “healthy” junk food, and desserts consumed last week. Similar to my trip to Portland, I am feeling like its time for another little detox this week and I’m hoping to cleanse my system with lots of water, veggies, and tough workouts.
I struggle with healthy eating just like the next person and sometimes feel like there is a devil and an angel in my head telling me what to order or eat. I try to come up with healthy tips to live by, especially while traveling, but it doesn’t always pan out that way. My goal for this blog has always been to show the importance of eating whole foods as much as you can, but with a little indulgence thrown in there too. I try not to beat myself up too much when I overindulge but I also want to meat my fitness and body image goals.
I’d love to hear how you all stay nice to yourselves when you veer off the path a bit and especially how you stay healthy while traveling or eating out. What are your tips?!
On regular weeknights I try to calm my sweet tooth by whipping up a light dessert like banana soft serve! Usually I do vanilla with lots of toppings, but this time I made chocolate soft serve with raspberry and chopped chocolate on top. I made a double batch and ate the first right after blending it, but the second batch I placed in the freezer for a more ice cream-like consistency. I like it both ways so it’s really more about your preference.
- 3 bananas, peeled, chopped and frozen
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- chopped chocolate and raspberry jam, optional
- Add bananas, almond milk, cocoa powder and vanilla extract to a food processor and blend until completely combined.
- Top with chocolate and raspberry jam or other toppings (dried coconut, nut butter, fresh fruit, cocoa nibs, etc).

Haha I have that same problem – I always get dessert when my work is footing the bill cuz…FREE DESSERT! This looks like the perfect ice cream to get back to your healthy habits with!

Free dessert gets me every time! So does the dessert I have to pay for. Ok, fine, all of it! I’m glad I’m not alone here haha

I try to stick to foods that are really worth the calorie splurge when I’m traveling. If I can only get it in that place and I want to try it, I will. I also try to focus on walking and getting lots of exercise when I’m traveling but for the most part, I still keep it pretty healthy. I think not restricting yourself keeps from going nuts on vacation.

This is a really great way to think about it, Cassie. I usually do that with food so that I order something that I wouldn’t normally be able to make at home and I should do this more with desserts. Thanks!
